Product Description
He amassed the most successful high school coaching record (1,274-192) ever during his 46-year career at DeMatha High School. Now, in Coaching Basketball Successfully, Morgan Wootten shares the wealth of knowledge that produced a .869 winning percentage, 5 national championships, a National Basketball Hall of Fame induction, and hundreds of high-achieving student-athletes.
Loaded with insights, instructions, and drills, the book contains a wealth of relevant stories, teaching points, and Xs and Os to cover every situation. Coaching Basketball Successfully is your guide to managing a program, team, and players on and off the court every season.
In some respects, a top-level college coach is a lot like a manager in any business. He has to turn a group of talented individuals into a smoothly running team, and he has to produce results that please the fans of his team--the shareholders of the athletic program. Thus, in Leading with the Heart, Krzyzewski reviews the lessons he's learned as basketball coach at Duke University, and tries to universalize them so they translate to any leadership position. For example, he writes, "Adjustments are not unusual, they are usual. So a leader's ability to think on his feet ... to do things without instruction ... is of paramount importance." Makes sense, as does this admonition: "When teaching, always remember this simple phrase: 'You hear, you forget. You see, you remember. You do, you understand.'"
The book has four sections--"Preseason," "Regular Season," "Postseason," and "All-Season"--and each of those has four chapters. Each chapter begins with three quotes ("Too many rules get in the way of leadership" leads off chapter 1), and ends with bulleted tips summing up the chapter's message. Between the quotes and the bullet points are anecdotes about Duke basketball games and (occasionally) Krzyzewski's life outside basketball. What you come away with is an understanding of why Krzyzewski is a great basketball coach, why former Duke assistants such as Tommy Amaker and Quin Snyder are probably going to become great basketball coaches, and how anyone who's currently a coach can become a better coach. It would be great if other types of managers in other types of businesses could incorporate these lessons in compassionate, focused, highly flexible leadership, but it seems unlikely. Most managers in business rise through the ranks not because of their ability to lead or inspire but because of their knowledge and competence (if not their connections). On the other hand, it would be nice if each of us, just once, could work for someone like Coach K, someone who could push the right buttons and lead us to our own version of the Final Four. Not likely, but a pretty sweet fantasy.
From Publishers Weekly
Duke basketball coach Krzyzewski, today's most successful NCAA coach, reviews significant games and key events in his career in addition to offering advice to coaches, players and everyone trying to do better in life. The son of working-class Polish immigrants, he got a scholarship to West Point, where he became an accomplished player before becoming a coach. His breezy approach is direct and simple: what's most important is working as a team toward a common goal--not necessarily to win the game, but to play the best possible game. Says Coach K, "There are five fundamental qualities that make every team great: communication, trust, collective responsibility, caring and pride." Approaching each season the same way, he extends himself to his players, encouraging them to spend time at his home and with his family, while emphasizing the importance of keeping up with academics and enjoying the overall experience of college. In fact, Krzyzewski tries to hire assistant coaches who have played for him because they're versed in on- and off-court problems. At the end of each chapter, he offers general pointers, such as that "business, like basketball, is a game of adjustments. So be ready to adjust." Although he occasionally refers to a coach as a "leader," for the most part he leaves it up to readers to connect the dots between his coaching strategies and useful business strategies.

Though he was better at it than almost anyone in American history, building a sports dynasty was never a goal for UCLA head coach John Wooden. Rather, it was Wooden’s passionate desire to teach his players how to become the best team they could be. To Wooden, “Competitive Greatness” was a tangible and teachable force.
One of the lesser-known aspects of Wooden’s career is the private notebooks in which he regularly recorded his observations, goals, and leadership concepts as they applied to basketball, success, and life. Wooden on Leadership draws from those personal notes to share practical and powerful leadership skills that anyone can use to improve performance and overcome self-imposed limitations.
Wooden on Leadership contains the best of Wooden’s observations, covering everything from teamwork (“It takes 10 hands to score a basket”) and self-control (“Emotion is the enemy”) to concentration (“Don’t look at the scoreboard”) and dealing with defeat (“Things turn out best for those who make the best of the way things turn out”). Featuring pivotal moments in Wooden’s own leadership journey, it explores the 15 fundamental leadership qualities--building blocks--of his famous Pyramid of Success, illustrating their relevance in building a winning organization. Each chapter concludes with Wooden’s “Rules to Lead By,” point-by-point action steps covering the chapter’s key concepts. along with pivotal moments in his own leadership journey.
“On Wooden” summary sections throughout the book feature penetrating insights on Coach Wooden’s leadership methods from players and coaches who worked with him during his career, including All-Americans Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Gail Goodrich, and David Meyers and assistant coaches Denny Crum, Gary Cunningham, and Eddie Powell. As participants and contributors to Wooden’s legacy, their words provide a revealing and personal perspective.
Wooden on Leadership reveals the leadership wisdom of John Wooden. It presents the core concepts, methods, and beliefs that Wooden used to teach his teams how to attain Competitive Greatness, and true personal success. 256 pages.
The Basketball Coach's Bible claims to be essential reading for basketball coaches, whether they're coaching your daughter's fourth-grade team or a Division I college team. Endorsements are included from both youth coaches and well-known professional and college coaches such as Phil Jackson and Jim Calhoun. Can any book really cover a topic that broadly and do a good job? The resounding answer in this case is yes. Mr. Goldstein starts from the premise that if you learn the fundamentals well, the rest of the game comes along naturally. The first seven short chapters of the book lay out his philosophy of the game and coaching, providing a blueprint to follow.
The remainder of the book has two parts, multipart lessons that focus on individual skills such as dribbling and passing, and another series of lessons on team offense and defense. Each lesson begins with a simple concept and then adds more complex features as your players' skills progress. Charts accompany each lesson and detail the prerequisite skills, time needed, and effort that is required.
This book is one of those rare breeds that live up to its hype. One drawback is that younger players may not have enough practice time to complete all of the drills you would like, but those you do choose will be winners. --Rob Frankland
From Scientific American
I don't often endorse books or products but a book came across my desk that I feel is of interest to any man or women interested in coaching basketball at any level. Sidney Goldstein has penned a book titled The Basketball Coach's Bible and it is a must for every basketball coach. The Penn State grad has put together a book that helps the novice all the way up to the veteran. Goldstein has ideas for practice plans, drills, coaching ideas and tips, as well as how to layout a court. the book uses charts and diagrams along with 40 illustrations and is written well.
The book is sensational! I highly recommend the book to coaches at any level, from 4th and 5th grade through high school and college.

As a coach of a 5th and 6th grade boys basketball team I found this book a tremendous teaching tool this season. Most of the children I coach have had little or no formal teaching in basketball previous to me. This books true value comes from being geared towards all skill levels. A coach at my level, straight through coaches of High school varsity teams, can find drills to introduce to their players.
Every year I've bought a new book on drills because I've never been completly happy with the previous years' purchase. I'm happy to say that next year, and for many more to come, I won't have to buy another.

I coach a high school team and this book has become my bible. Everything contained within this book is helpful. The sections on Man to man pressure defense is excellent. We have adopted the Shuffle Offense for our half court offense this season. Whenever I have some free time I read and re-read this book and everytime I pick up something new. This is a must have for the serious basketball coach.

I have been thoroughly impressed with this book. I coach my daughter's junior high team and had spent countless hours on the Internet looking for the perfect site to give me coaching insite. Since this book arrived in the mail, I have not been to any other resource. This book intuitively guides you on how to reach kids of all ages. The emphasis placed on an unselfish brand of basketball will tell you everything you need to know about why this man was so successful coaching college basketball. Each chapter is a valuable lesson on the game with the first half dedicated to offense and the latter portion to defense. Each section has a "how to teach" and "how to drill" every concept covered. He also explains what will be easy to pick up and what will be difficult to master for kids at all levels. His knowledge comes not only from coaching the great Tar Heel teams but from running annual camps geared towards teaching kids 10 and up. I wish he was still holding these camps because I would want my daughter or son to experience his instruction. If you're about to take on the challenge of coaching junior high basketball (boys or girls), do yourself a favor, read and re-read this book; it will give you confidence you're doing things the right way. It is excellently written by the legend himself.

On November 15, 1993, a white-haired, 72-year-old gentleman named Dr. Amberry stepped up to the free throw line and into the Guinness Book of World Records by sinking 2,750 shots in a row. He ended his 12-hour streak without a miss, stopping only because they had to close the gym for the night.
In Free Throw, he reveals his secrets. Beginning with the proper mechanics of the shot, he then explains the importance of the mental game and shares his techniques to help players stay on target even while under pressure. Combining these mental and physical elements, he presents a unique and straightforward 7-step method that teaches readers how to become a 90% free throw shooter.

This review is for: Coaching Youth Basketball: A Baffled Parent's Guide (Paperback)
I was drafted to coach a my son's basketball team a few months ago. An experienced coach, I'm not. It was an absolute delight to have a friend suggest this book. It provides everything from a great youth coaching philosophy to all the Xs and Os I could ever need. Equally important is that it provides offensive and defensive schemes that the team could understand and remember. Bottom line: these kids aren't the athletes they will be someday, but they have begun to understand how to play the game intelligently, that they are more successful as a team than as individuals, and they support one another in games and in practices. There is a David-and-Goliath element to their play now. They are usually over-matched physically, but they manage to pull most games out at the end.
This book will be great for your team and, as time goes on, for the game of basketball and the kids who play it, too. Coach Faucher really knows how to capture the kids' attention.

i decided that i wanted to coach basketball at my school, i wasn't sure what i should do, how to do it, etc. this book is a real good start. it talks about what skills kids need to be taught, it gives drills on how to teach those skills, it gives you sample practice plans that show you how to organize the drills, etc. it even gives you some plays for inbounding the ball, etc. all in all the book has everything a first year coach would want. a small warning however, this book is designed for first year coaches. you are not going to find how to run a triangle offense, or how to beat a pressure defense. but if you are looking for a book to start you off, then this is the one.
Game Strategy and Tactics for Basketball: Preparing to Win the Sideline Battles is both a how-to book and a guide for how to plan strategy and tactics for basketball for an entire season or an individual game. Coaches often focus on X's and O's and overlook how and when a particular offense or defense should be applied and used during a game. Game Strategy and Tactics for Basketball: Preparing to Win the Sideline Battles serves as a planning guide and a master checklist for all the possible situations that a coach will face during a season. The book includes both traditional and some "out-of-the-box" strategies to the common situations that coaches face and provides both the pros and the cons of the approaches described. It is not the author's intention to tell each coach exactly what to do, but to serve as a guide in the decision making process.
About the author:
A 24 year veteran of the coaching profession, with twenty-two of those years spent as a varsity head coach, Coach Kevin Sivils amassed 464 wins and his teams earned berths in the state playoffs 19 out of 22 seasons with his teams advancing to the state semi-finals three times. This review is from: Game Strategies and Tactics for Basketball: Bench Coaching for Success (Paperback)
I had the opportunity to read "Game Strategies and Tactics for Basketball" by Kevin Sivils a couple of weeks ago on a plane flight. I honestly was shocked with the amount of information in the 106 page book. I have read books on coaching basketball for the last twenty years and this is one of the best I have come across. It is concise and makes you think about how you handle every situation.
It isn't just basketball coaching, but administration of your basketball program and that is what I am impressed with. I would recommend it to any basketball coach on the high school level, especially the younger guys. It would have saved me from making some "young and dumb" mistakes early in my coaching career.
It is a blueprint on how you should run a basketball program. I really liked his management ideas on how to prepare at home and on the road. He hit on the mark with his view on special situations and how to plan for them. What things you have "control" over before, during, and after a basketball game.
You are going to want to check out this "information packed" book on basketball coaching/management ideas that will make you think.

Let's be honest, you can choose from hundreds of thousands of basketball books (I see a collection of 154,000 just on Amazon). However, I have not found any as concise and informative as Kevin Sivil's Game Strategies and Tactics for Basketball. As a young coach, it is easy to get caught up in the X's and O's of the game. Coach Sivils uses preparation as a catalyst to success. It is not the moment that counts, but the preparation it took to allow your team perfect execution in that moment. For all the variables we cannot control as coaches, Coach Sivils focuses his efforts on those variables which we can control through preparation.
If you are a young coach, as myself, looking for guidance and direction, this book is a quick and efficient utilization of your time. I was able to read it in less than a week as it is well organized and straightforward. And, as coaches, do we really have time for anything else???
In this instructor's guide, Krause, a 30-year coaching veteran, offers comprehensive assistance for developing a daily and seasonal basketball practice plan. Skill areas such as shooting, rebounding, fundamental movements, defensive and offensive play, ball handling, and team concepts are organized into a workable format. Tips for coaches on overcoming specific problem areas are included, as well as suggestions for basic practice drills. However, the book's real strength is in its emphasis on teaching basketball fundamentals correctly. Basketball Skills is an outstanding resource, potentially valuable to novice as well as experienced basketball coaches. It is highly recommended for serious sports collections. - Kenneth Tillman, Trenton State Coll., N.J.

REVIEWS
For youth basketball fundamentals - this is the best!, November 28, 2005
Even the most experienced players will need to review basketball fundamentals if they decide to begin coaching. What is second nature for you is brand new to young players.
You will be doing a better job than 99.9% of youth league coaches if you teach your young players the solid fundamentals in this book. I have coached youth basketball for many years, and this book is the first place I look at the beginning of each season.
Some drills are too complex for very young players, but if you instill the basics found in the early chapters, your youthful players will reap the benefits for the rest of their basketball lives.
Highest recommendation!

5.0 out of 5 starsJerry Krause is the coach who mentored Don Meyer on teaching fundamentals!, October 7, 2009
This review is from: Basketball Skills & Drills - 3rd Edition (Paperback)
I had the distinct priviledge of working for coaching legend Don Meyer for 16 GREAT summers at his Bison Basketball Camp when he was the coach at Lipscomb University. I got to meet Jerry Krause, the coach who mentored Coach Meyer on teaching fundamentals. Meyer is a master teacher of the basics of the game, but he learned a lot of it from the author of this book,Coach Krause.
This book is a great tool for beginning coaches, youth coaches and recreational coaches who want to teach more than a play or two and how to run a zone defense.
It is also a great reference for the serious high school coach who really wants to master teaching the essential fundamentals of the game of basketball. If the skill and how to teach it cannot be found in this book, it is not worth knowing about.
