Bruce Pearl's late game and late clock situations are considered huge opportunities for his team. As an introduction, the Volunteer early offense is broken down piece by piece. The key to this attack is the optimization of each player's ability on different parts of the floor. This read & react full court offense takes advantage of all defensive decisions and coverages. Two reliable options in this offense are based on ball screen calls. The first play is a high screen and roll for the post creating an inside seal opportunity for the post player. Another play is the high screen and pop. This option spreads the floor 4 out/1 in and can easily flow into continuity half court offense. From the baseline out of bounds, Pearl unleashes five unique set plays from the 1-4 set. Execution of this OB series will produce a lob lay-up, switch seal, hi/low seal, high/low back screen and post pin. The box set alignment creates five variations that can all lead to baskets. The pin down screen frees the point guard on top of the floor. The options occur with penetration, down screens and slip screens.

Coach Pearl is widely known for his fast tempo and full court pressure. He believes that a breaking offense can create tempo, but the full court attack on defense can control tempo. This "encyclopedia" of Pearl's full court style is presented by taking parts of Pearl's previously released videos from Pearl's days at Southern Indiana (D-II National Champs in '95), and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, (NCAA Sweet 16 in '05), and is divided into three parts: a lecture session where he breaks down the defense; on the court, where the defense is shown in a teaching setting; and through extensive highlight footage, where you can see his Tennessee teams using this defense in game action. The "Building the defense" segment is a step-by-step tutorial on how to choose each player for the pressing system. The advantages of Pearl's defense are numerous and include: it makes teams change their normal style and forces them to prepare especially for you, it can help you score in bunches and break a game wide open and it wears down the opponent physically and mentally. This full court pressure defensive system will present a way for you to control the tempo of games instead of reacting to it!

Coach Pearl's teams have led their league in scoring in each of his 15-year head-coaching career. His highest scoring team averaged over 101 points a game. His philosophy is to attack when the opponent is at its weakest, which is when they are retreating on defense. Pearl presents the concepts, teaching points and drills that make the Volunteers a force on offense. Transition offense comes after a miss or a make by the opponent. Getting the ball in bounds quickly is a must for transition basketball. The "circle" is a technique for the point guard to get open for a quick pass from the in bounds passer. A foundational drill for transition is the 3, 4 and 5 man fast break without defense. A key teaching point is advancing the ball by the pass as quickly as possible. Drills include the 4-man break, 5-man break and 7-man break. Defenders are used to mix up coverage and attempt to disrupt the break.
