Dribbling Tips

SPIN DRIBBLE

Dribble in one direction then quickly stop, make a reverse pivot, then take an extra dribble with the same hand, then push the ball in front of you, switch hands, and explode past the defender. Keep your dribble low on the spin dribble to avoid carrying the ball(travelling).

KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!

When doing all drills involving dribbling, it is extremely important that you keep your head up. You must be able to see where you are going and where your teammates are, so that you can pass them the ball when they are open. Try to see the entire court with your peripheral vision. This is a quality all great guards possess.

DEVELOP YOUR "OFF" HAND!

It is important to practice developing both hands equally well. When practicing your ball handling, make sure that you practice at least as much with your weak hand as you do your strong hand. If you have a weakness, a good defender will find it, and take advantage, forcing you to use your off hand.

CROSSOVER DRIBBLE

When doing a cross over dribble, a quick and sudden shift of weight and movement will get you past your defender. Make sure you put your weight on the foot opposite of the direction that you want to go. This will fool your defender. Then cross over to the other side with a big step to explode past your defender. The crossover dribble must be low and  close to your body because you are bringing the ball right in front of your defender.

DRIBBLE UP THE MIDDLE!

By dribbling the ball over half court on the sideline, you are giving the defense an advantage. Try to take the ball to the middle of the court, so that you give yourself more passing options. Near the sideline, they can set up their help side defense or trap you. Change directions and take the ball to the middle, as it helps relieve some pressure.

WHEN TO DRIBBLE

Look to pass. Minimize your dribble--use it for a purpose. Try to limit the dribble to these uses:

1. Advance the ball up the floor.
2. Take the ball to the basket.
3. Improve your passing angle.
4. Get yourself out of trouble.

Use as few dribbles as are necessary to fullfill a purpose. If you can get to the hoop with only one dribble... do that... you will be quicker and more effective.
