Details:
  • Chapter 1: BUILDING PROPER SHOOTING TECHNIQUE

In Better Shooting's first chapter, legendary Coach Rick Torbett gives a basic overview of proper shooting technique. You could say he put the summary first.

The chapter is divided into four parts, such as Hand Position and Feet Position. Coach Torbett also explains key concepts such as where you should start your shot, how high to jump when shooting, and at what point during the jump a player should release the ball.

The chapter is perfect for coaches or parents of young players looking to teach the basics of shooting to their child. However, even the most experienced players and coaches usually pick up at least a couple points from chapter one.

  • Chapter 2: USING YOUR EYES TO MAKE MORE SHOTS

Chapter two is an in-depth study of what may be the most overlooked aspect of great shooting - vision. In the opening sequence, Coach Torbett states "Shooting is an eye hand coordination activity, and lots can be said about the hands, but often times not enough said about your vision, about your eyes."

He goes on to explain exactly where your eyes should focus when you shoot, as well as several specific methods players can use to improve their "Bull's-Eye" vision.

Chapter two can be beneficial for everyone from pros to kids. The vast majority of the content borders on revolutionary, since vision is so rarely discussed in-depth by shooting instructors.

  • Chapter 3: UNDERSTANDING AND BUILDING PROPER FOOTWORK

As Chapter two is a detailed study of vision, chapter three takes a look at proper footwork. Coach explains the only two methods used to set the feet before shooting. He then details which method should be used in various game situations.

For players having trouble developing a quick release or problems with fading and balance, chapter 3 also gives step by step training methods to learn proper footwork. Better Shooting not only teaches proper form, but also tells your exactly how to develop perfect form!

No matter your age ar ability, you must have proper footwork mastered to become a great shooter. The feet are essential to attaining both a lightning quick release and a high percentage. It's amazing how many players (even at basketball's highest levels) have poor footwork. This causes missed shots, traveling violations, and even a slow release. But with Better Shooting, any player can become sound - from the ground up.

    11 minutes, 32 seconds.

  • Chapter 4: COMMON BAD HABITS AND HOW TO GET RID OF THEM

In the video's longest chapter, Coach Torbett explains twelve bad habits that can cause players to miss shots, get their shot blocked, or have a slow release.

Only a rare few shooters have absolutely perfect form, so everybody can benefit from chapter four. It's also interesting to note that some players who think they're in slumps have actually just developed a bad habit. Once the bad habit is diagnosed and fixed, their shooting percentage dramatically jumps back up!

In each of the chapter's sections, coach first explains proper form in respect to the bad habit. Second, a play demonstrates the bad habit. Third, Torbett gives reasons why players may develop the habit. And finally, he discusses a method or technique players can use to fix the bad habit.

  • Chapter 5: TRAINING WITH A PARTNER

In chapter five, Coach Torbett gives four methods players can use to train with a partner to improve their shot.

One of the methods is termed Fly-Bys, a fast moving drill in which players shoot while being distracted by the partner. Many players shoot great in practice, but have trouble in real games. Fly-Bys can fix that problem, and Coach Torbett explains how.

Chapter five includes a plethora of small but key points sprinkled throughout its five minutes. So even if you have no way of training with a partner, there's plenty of information you'll get from the chapter. For example, Coach Torbett explains his revolutionary concept of Biofeedback, which players can use to develop a "feel for shooting!"

  • Chapter 6: SPECIAL HINTS TO IMPROVE YOUR SHOT

Chapter six presents seven specific hints that will improve your shot. There are sections titled Shooting from the Post, Dragging a Foot to Shorten a Shot, and Gaining Power on Long Range Shots.

These hints can be applied by players of all abilities. Have you never been very good at bank shots? Or do you get stripped when you shoot from the post? If so, chapter six can make a real difference in your game!

  • Chapter 7: MISCONCEPTIONS

In the video's most detailed chapter, Coach Torbett discusses in great depth, four misconceptions about the finer principles of shooting. The misconceptions include the often taught phrases Get the Ball Above Your Head, Stagger Your Feet, and Shoot with your Fingertips.

Chapter seven is targeted towards the player, coach, or parent who truly wants to understand the art of shooting a basketball. It's amazing how many advanced basketball minds watch the chapter and realize they've been making a costly mistake for years. Through Coach Torbett's detailed explanation, they come to understand the mistake itself, why they're making this mistake, how it's hurting their shot, and how to ensure they fix the problem.

    6 minutes, 49 seconds.
