Ball screens are becoming a huge part of basketball and can be a successful tool for your team if they are executed properly. This ball screen DVD will give you the tools you need to install this system into your program.

In this on-court clinic presentation, Chris Mack gives you a comprehensive look at the inner workings of a successful ball screen offense.

Coach Mack will show you how a ball screen offense can:

    • Limit turnovers and make plays by keeping the ball in your best players hands
    • Force your opponent's post players to defend away from the basket
    • Gain rebounding advantages, get open shots, get to the free throw line more often and create mismatches using rotations

Learn the most important concepts you must teach the dribbler and the screener: Creating separation, getting to the level of the screen, how to hold the screen and the three types of screens.

Using a 2-on-2 demonstration, Mack shows you the five defense attacks most commonly used to defend the ball screen. For each of these scenarios, Mack takes you through two ways to attack the defense and provides the ball handler and screener reads and passes.

To help you incorporate ball screens into your offense, Mack delivers ball screen plays in a 5-on-0 setting.

Using this effective ball screen offense, Coach Mack was the winningest first-year head coach in Division I in 2009-10 and the only rookie head coach to lead his team into the 2010 NCAA Tournament field.

    • Get NBA drills and philosophies that have proven successful
    • Learn to protect the paint with suffocating closeout techniques
    • Give your ball handlers multiple screening options using the pick and roll offense
    with Lawrence Frank,
Boston Celtics Assistant Coach, former New Jersey Nets Head Coach

Lawrence Frank delivers proven NBA concepts that are valuable to any high school or college program.

    Coaching Philosophy
Coach Frank begins with a discussion on coaching philosophy and the importance of your players knowing and believing in that philosophy. He shares some helpful pointers you can use to get your players to "want what you want" and work for a common goal.

    Closeout Defense
Train your players to take away your opponent's shot, deny the post pass and direct the dribble using three drills that Frank uses with the Boston Celtics. These drills teach the proper footwork and technique for defensive closeouts while working on guarding the ball, sprinting to the ball on the pass, and helping with a cutter.

Frank also includes instruction on transition defense by demonstrating his 5-on-4 scramble drill. These defensive concepts help illustrate his defensive philosophy: Protect the paint, closeout to contest the 3-point shot and communicate.

    Pick and Roll Offense
Maintain the flow of your offense even if your set play doesn't work by using the pick and roll. Frank breaks down the four S's for the ball handler in the pick and roll offense:

    • Starting point - Help the screener get the best angle by positioning your self to beat your man.
    • Set up - Create separation from your defender while moving toward the basket.
    • Separation -
    • Score
    • Know where to start the pick and roll based on the angle of the screen and how the defense is playing you and your abilities as a player.

From there, Frank breaks down the hardest pick and roll to defend - the straight on pick and roll. He shows a basic pick and roll set, a double pick and roll set, and four other actions that will give your ball handler the option on who to use as a screen. In addition, this set up allows you to flow to different alignments that play to the strengths of your team and that give you multiple options from one alignment.

Coach Frank gives great insight on his coaching style that relates to all levels of basketball. Learn how developing team philosophy, core values, and a team culture will results in togetherness in the locker room and on the court for your team.

Install these proven concepts and drills into your program today and start reaping the benefits of Frank's extensive basketball experience.

    • Draw your opponent's post player outside of the paint

    with Saul Phillips,
    North Dakota State University Head Coach;
2009 Summit League Coach of the Year

Learn how Saul Phillips led his team to the NCAA Men's Tournament in their first year of eligibility! Coach Phillips explains how instrumental the screen & roll has been to the early success of his program while competing against the bigger NCAA Division I basketball teams.

Coach Phillips' system is tremendous for battling teams that pressure passing lanes and have bigger, more talented players. He begins with a 2-on-2 set-up, covering three types of ball-screens:

    • Vertical: Basic flat screen above the three-point line with "Phoenix Action."
    • Standard: With the screener facing a sideline, Phillips teaches you how to read the hedge man and the options available.
    • Chip: Screen in transition where the screener sets and pops.

With these three ball-screen options, Phillips demonstrates how to "pink" and "plus" the screen to counter defensive pressure and weakside help. He also demonstrates options whereby the screen posts after rolling or creating a mismatch by screening away for a shooter.

Phillips goes into a 5-on-0 setting to demonstrate the three sets used in his screen and roll offense: Gold, Open, and Vertical. Phillips' stresses the importance of putting your players in the best possible positions to make smart decisions. He covers a variety of defensive pressure scenarios including hard hedges, traps, and switches and what you can do to neutralize the defense.

This DVD is a must for any team, at any level, that is looking create mismatches on the offensive end of the floor.
