SWOOPES ON HOOPS VIDEO
Swoopes On Hoops Go one-on-one with Houston Comet Sheryl Swoopes, the brightest star of the WNBA. Sheryl's step-by-step demonstartions reveal simple but potent techniques to improve your game and give you the winning edge. Sheryl Swoopes began playing basketball at the age of seven, bravely facing down her toughest opponents of all: her older brothers. "They'd play rough hoping I'd quit," says Sheryl. "But every time they'd push me down, I'd wipe dry my tears and go back out to play." Hard work paid off. During her first at Texas Tech she was named All American. She went on to lead Tech to their first national championship, breaking the NCAA record, scoring 47 points in a single playoff game. USA Today and Sports Illustrated named her Athlete of the Year. She led the women's basketball team to a stunning 60-0 victory at the '96 Olympics. Then Sheryl came home to score the sweetest victory of all: She beat her brothers in a game of backyard ball.

Effective High/Low Post Player Moves

with Theresa Grentz,
University of Illinois Head Women's Coach

Whether it's coaching the US Olympic team or winning a national championship, when there's a job to be done, the Grentz name has been synonymous with success. Coach Grentz begins her presentation talking about her thoughts on stance. Knowing where you are as a player around the lane is important. The low post is for power and strength, the mid-post is finesse and the high post is for high skills. Floor markings, hands, balance and a squared stance to the ball are other important elements she touches on. When catching in the post players are instructed to step back toward the basket with the baseline foot. Without a dribble, the player can get to the basket with one big step. The next move is the dribble drop move. Grentz feels that high post play has many options. Back door cuts are dangerous from the high post to cutting wings. Players are encouraged to face up in the high post to shoot or drive. In this demonstration clinic setting, coaches from the audience ask questions as Grentz uses players to explain and demonstrate. Post players need only three moves to be effective in the low to mid-post area. These moves are illustrated from the high and low post on this DVD. This presentation is an excellent DVD for fundamental development of post players at all levels.

As a high school player, Jackie Stiles committed herself to become a better player and shooter by making 1,000 shots a day from her sophomore year in high school until her freshman year in college. Stiles believes that repetition, with correct technique, will make good shooters great.

Using the BEEF shooting principle, Stiles focuses on a number of teaching techniques including square up, one-two step, power foot, step back hesitation and the "Stiles hop."

The 1,000 shots workout distributes jump shots into seven different spots on the floor. From each spot she makes 100 shots. Between sets of jump shots, she will make 100 free throws.

To give the workout variety, she explains how to use different techniques to break up the total into groups of 15 or 20. From each spot she will use several ways and skills to get the shot off. Players can alter this workout to fit their age, strength, and goals as a shooter.

This is an excellent workout template for any player to use to become a great shooter.
