Using on-court demonstration, Coach Smith teaches the match-up principles, alignments, and trap options for full-court man-to-man, 1-2-1-1, and 2-2-1 pressure. He also demonstrates 1-2-1-1 rotations for stopping often-used press-breaks such as a 1-4 or a clear-out. Progressive drills are included to improve team defensive posture and communication. Each of the defenses in this video use virtually the same rotations and trap options as the ball is advanced, and can be used independently or in combination!

Tubby Smith's four tenets of defense are: don't give up lay-ups, no second shots, contest all shots and force the opponent to make plays. His on ball defensive philosophy is keyed by good pressure and pushing the ball to the sideline. All penetrating passes are overplayed in addition to constant ball pressure. In this presentation, Coach Smith breaks down each defensive position in terms of positioning and responsibility. Trapping areas in this system are in the paint on penetration by the defender and the closest help defender. Ball penetration causes defensive rotation, which is highlighted by Smith as the ball is moved around. On a pass-by-pass basis, Smith analyzes the defense's goals, strengths and vulnerable areas. Being aggressive on defending in-bounds passes is another focus of this defensive system. Full court pressure includes ball pressure, back tapping and aggressive trap situations. Smith discusses the white press - good after a dead ball or made shot - and the black deny press. He also includes drills that teach many of the individual and team concepts needed to build this defense, including the 4-on-4 half court, which is a staple in his practice.

Offense begins with great defense in Tubby Smith's offensive system. The offensive progression begins with secondary offense. All players must be able to play all positions in this offense. The main focus in the half court is throwing the ball in the post. The Chase call is a ball reversal to move the defense as the post player follows the ball. A high low opportunity and a back screen are also options. This action leads to a 3-, 4- or 5-man motion offense. Swing, Drag, Through, Stagger and Fist are other teaching points in the secondary offense. This action is difficult to scout and defend because quick hitting options materialize in different situations. In the half court, the 40 series begins in a 1-4 high set and includes six options to score. Circle Transition is a drill that combines the secondary offense with half court motion offense.

These challenging drills include 2-on-2 full-court, 3-on-3 over play and deny and, 4-on-4 overplay sag and deny. Coach Smith concludes with his 4-on-3 contest-the-shot drill teaching players to effectively contest shots.

Players are always quicker when they are positioned correctly. Smith provides a simple, yet effective system to get players in the "right spot" to apply intense pressure on the ball, without give up easy shots. Order now and start getting the stops and turnovers your team needs to be successful.
